YAYOI KUSAMA
YAYOI KUSAMA CONTEXT AND ANALYSIS
Yayoi
Kusama
Yayoi Kusama is an 86 year old woman of an Asian heritage. She was born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Yayoi is a very popular writer with famous books out like; ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ which is a story about a girl called Alice who ventures into a world far from her ordinary and a book called ‘Hustlers Grotto’. From the reviews and interest of her work I feel like her art work is more publicised than her writing. Her art work consists of working with things like painting, collaging, sculpturing, performance art and environmental installations, however, her work is all enhanced and enforced by her mental illness.
At a very young age Yayoi had very frequent nervous disorders and hallucinations, from recent calculations at the age of 48 Yayoi admitted herself into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo. She has her own studio in the psychiatric hospital so that she can balance her artwork time and her mental health.
Yayois young family life wasn’t the most pleasant since her and her parents didn’t really speak because were strongly against her becoming an artist, she overcame this dominant fault and has done amazing things within her artistry like selling a piece of artwork for $5.1million also being part of the ‘Conceptual Art Movement’ and the ‘Abstract Expressionist Movement’, not only that she has exhibited along very big names such as; Andy Warhol, George Segal and Claes Oldenburg when she was about 31. As well as these amazing achievements she has created distinctive and notable work in films and produced great designs and pieces for Louis Vuitton and Selfridges. Which leads me to say that Yayoi has also broken the stereo type that people who was psychologically ill have no place within society as they thought to be insufficiently adequate to make something of themselves.

Infinity Mirror Room: Analysis
In this photo I can see a landscape, abstract photo which seems to be of a room plastered with mirrors and inside the room are various multi coloured lights. To add more detail to the last given sentence, I would say; the photo overall looks like a big, modern city like Tokyo or New York this comparative imagery is firstly given by the reflection of the mirrors rebounding off of each over, there seems to be a podium in the room -note that the podium and the base of the room (the background) are given off to be black because of the dull or dim lighting- this podium is then reflected so much in the room that it seems like it is a large area with many objects inside. The imagery is then emphasized by the lights, now the light are probably scarce in the one room, excluding the mirrors, but since the mirrors give the room such a complex the lights look multiplied as they occur to be hanging from the ceiling and then reflecting onto the floor. On the floor seems to be the frequent reflection of the edge of the room making the room give off more detail.
As I stated before the photo of the Infinity Mirror Room reminds me a lot of a modern, densely populated city at night* because of the lights and area size of the room. The way the photo makes me feel is quite complicated, the photo firstly makes me highly interested and intrigued because of the on-going size of the room it makes me wonder; ‘What is at the far side of the room?’, ‘What is behind the podium?’, ‘What does the room look like with no added decoration?’. But then after asking those questions and thinking of possible answers I’m then a bit uneasy on the contents of the photo because anything could have been behind the podium, anything could be on the other side of the room. My opinion of the photo is that it’s very striking and mind stimulating, I think this is because of the lights; the colour of the lights attract me and because there is so much my eyes are constantly fixed on the photo. And that’s the reason why I chose this piece, because it caught my eye.
Almost on every part of the photo there is a focal point, and leading lines, they are also known as lights. From blue to green to orange to pink, my eyes are drawn to each colour like a sort of chain reaction. This photo is very ironic as the fact that the mirror would make you think the photo is somewhat symmetrical, if you properly analyse the photo it’s pretty much the opposite. The right side of the photo seems to have more of a collection of podium s whereas the left side is more scarcely populated with black rectangles. My eyes are first drawn to the biggest podium which is in-between the middle of the photo and the far right side, the after that my eyes are just drawn to the lights which cover the rest of the podiums making my eyes wonder to the on-going collection of podiums.
As I have said previously the photos background is black then the colour comes from the lights. The colour of the lights had a limited variety; blue, orange, pink and green. However, the fact that the lights are of a huge amount it makes the photo seem like there is a lot of colours in the photo when the colour scheme is actually very limited. The dark shadows of the photo are only to be addressed as the background and the silhouettes of the podiums. I don’t really think the photo has any depth and weight to the work however the lights and the colour scheme gives the photo a more of a futuristic feel. So the mood of the photo is more technical and advanced.
The photo without the lights is a smooth, clean cut photo. On the other hand, with the lights it still keeps its edgy look, but it’s less dominant and more distorted. The photo is reflective, evidently and literally.
Overall if I was inside this room id feel pretty scared and confused, I would probably end up with a head ache. I think Yayoi created this photo to make everyone else see what her mind is like when she hallucinates and it is carried out pretty well.
